Variety of settings, same issues
In my twenty years in aging, I’ve worked in community nonprofits, government agencies, national nonprofits, statewide lobbies, and university research centers. My varied experience helps me understand these multifaceted issues from a variety of angles, and contributes to my wide skill set.
-
Fundraising
I have been awarded over three million dollars in grants from government agencies, public charities, and noteworthy foundations in aging. These include the Administration for Community Living, the National Institute on Disability & Rehabilitation Research, the Retirement Research Foundation, the John A. Hartford Foundation, the United Hospital Fund, the New York Health Foundation, the Fan Fox & Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, the Health Foundation for Western & Central New York, and the New York Community Trust.
-
Public speaking
I am an enthusiastic presenter. I’ve spoken many times at the American Society on Aging, the Gerontological Society of America, the American Public Health Association, Grantmakers in Aging, Aging Concerns Unite Us (where I gave the closing keynote address), along with participating in many smaller meetings as a speaker, session moderator, or panelist.
-
Programs
I have built infrastructure to support the growth of existing models as well as designed new programs to improve care and service networks for older adults. These include the Chronic Disease Self Management Program, the Aging Mastery Program, the Get Smart About Your Mouth initiative, and Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation. Most notably, I have been a driving force in making New York a leader in Age-Friendly Health Systems.
-
Advocacy
In 2005, I facilitated an advocacy event bringing hundreds of older adults to New York City Hall to demand increased funding for a broad scope of older adult programs. I’ve been a tireless aging advocate ever since. I’ve built coalitions and affinity groups to support important causes, collaborated with Senate leaders on a bill to include dental care in Medicare, and testified to the New York State legislature, which was picked up by the media in 2021.
-
Expertise and writing
I have been appointed to the New York Governor’s Re-Imagining Long-Term Care Task Force, and to several key Master Plan for Aging Subcommittees. I've contributed to many reports, and have published peer-reviewed articles in Disability and Health Journal and a book chapter in the textbook Health Promotion for People with Intellectual Disabilities.
